WACO, Texas - Two members of Baylor volleyball's 2006 signing class, setter Taylor Barnes and middle blocker Anna Breyfogle, were named 2005 High School All-Americans by prepvolleyball.com Wednesday. Prepvolleyball.com's list recognizes the top 150 players in the country.
Barnes, a 5-11 product of Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, led the Warriors to the class 5A championship. She was also ranked 55th overall and 13th at setter by prepvolleyball.com and was a finalist for the website's national player of the year award last year. Barnes earned back-to-back Fort Worth Star-Telegram player of the year awards as a sophomore and junior and was named first-team all-area by both the Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News both seasons. She was also named first team all-state by the Texas Girls' Coaches Association and lonestarvolleyball.com in 2003 and 2004. This season, the two-time defending District 7-5A most valuable player has led the Lady Warriors to a 38-7 record and a perfect 14-0 mark in district play to clinch the district title. Barnes participated in at the USA National Camp in 2002 and 2003 and attended the USA High Performance Camp in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Breyfogle, a 6-1 native of Buda, Texas, led Hays High School to the regional final. In the preseason, she ranked among the top 250 seniors by prepvolleyball.com. She led the Austin area in blocks and averaged 4.5 kills per game while recording over 60 aces. During the summer, she helped lead her Austin Juniors club team to the Girls 18 Junior Volleyball Gold Division National Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Breyfogle, a first-team all-district and academic all-district selection, was named one of the top 10 players in Central Texas by the Austin American-Statesman.
Barnes and Breyfogle, along with fellow signees Ashlee Cooper (6-5, MB, La Place, La.), Katie Sanders (6-1, MB/RS, Katy, Texas) and Lauren Keeton (6-2, MB, Groesbeck, Texas) will join the Bears in August. The current Baylor squad will soon begin spring workouts.
