HOUSTON, Texas --- Behind a strong performance by the Lady Bears' pitchers and the bat of freshman Brette Reagan, the No. 15 Baylor softball team picked up a pair of victories in day two at the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational, blanking Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 14-0 in five innings before defeating Samford 8-2. With the wins, Baylor improves to 5-3 on the season.
In game one against the Islanders (2-5), Baylor jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Chelsi Lake delivered a two-out single to score Harmony Schwethelm to give the Lady Bears the early 1-0 advantage. Reagan provided the key hit in the inning when she blasted a three-run home run, her second of the season, over the left field wall as Baylor took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
After the Islanders were held scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Lake came through with another two-out RBI hit in the second as she connected for a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Jordan Daniels and Tessa Lynam, to give the Lady Bears a six-run lead.
The Lady Bears continued to put crooked numbers on the board in the third as, after Lauren Parker scored, Schwethelm delivered a RBI single while Ashley Monceaux smashed a two-run double down the left-field line. Reagan then delivered the final touches on the inning with her second home run of the contest, a booming shot over the left field wall, to give Baylor a commanding 12-0 lead.
Baylor added a run in the fourth as Kylie Conroy ended the scoring in the contest as she lifted a two-out solo home run over the left-center field wall, the first of her career, to give the Lady Bears a commanding 14-0 lead.
Nicole Jackson came into the game in relief of starting pitcher Sarah Hausner and retired the side in order in the fifth as Baylor claimed its second shutout of the tournament.
Hausner picked up the victory for the Lady Bears to move to 2-0 on the season after allowing only two hits while striking out two in four innings of work.
Reagan led the Lady Bears attack, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI. The two round-trippers marked the 12th time in school history a Baylor player had recorded two home runs in a game, tying the school record.
Schwethelm added three hits in the win as Baylor collected 15 hits in the contest, establishing a new season high.
Baylor's strong presence at the plate continued in game two as the Lady Bears scored first in the contest against Samford (1-7) when Monceaux doubled to right-center field, scoring Kelly Osburn from second.
The Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second when, on a sacrifice by Conroy, Lynam scored on a throwing error to give Baylor the two-run advantage.
After a scoreless third inning, Parker, who doubled earlier in the inning, eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as Baylor took a three-run lead heading into the fifth.
The Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth; however, Baylor exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to grab control of the game. Reagan and Lake delivered back-to-back RBI doubles as Jordan Daniels smacked a two-run, two-out single through the right side to give the Lady Bears a commanding 8-2 lead.
Lisa Ferguson came into the game in relief and retired the Bulldogs in the final two innings, striking out the side in the seventh, without surrendering a run as Monceaux picked up the victory to improve to 1-1 on the season after allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out 10 Samford batters, establishing a new career high and marking the highest strikeout total for a Baylor pitcher this season.
Reagan led the Lady Bears attack against the Bulldogs with two doubles as Schwethelm also added two hits in the victory.
Baylor will conclude action at the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 19, when the Lady Bears meet Northwestern State at 11:00 a.m.
