PALM SPRINGS, Calif. --- The No. 18 Baylor softball team split a pair of hard fought games in day two of action at the Palm Springs Classic, rallying to defeat No. 6 Stanford 5-2 before falling to No. 11 Oregon State 3-1. With the split, Baylor moves to 8-5 on the season and 2-2 in action at the Palm Springs Classic.
In game one against the sixth-ranked Cardinal, Baylor fell behind in the bottom of the fourth inning when Stanford's Catalina Morris broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run to center field as the Lady Bears fell behind 2-0.
With Stanford's Missy Penna carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Baylor exploded for three runs in the frame to grab the lead. With one out, Miriam Romero broke up the no-hitter with a triple to right-center field. Senior Kelly Osburn quickly tied the game as she followed with a game-tying two-run home run, her third of the season, well over the right-center field wall.
With two outs in the inning, Brette Reagan gave the Lady Bears the lead for good as the hot-hitting freshman took a 3-2 pitch and blasted a solo home run over the left-center field wall, giving Baylor a one-run advantage. The home run was Reagan's team leading fifth of the season as the freshman connected on her second home run of the tournament.
After Stanford was unable to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, Baylor's Chelsi Lake gave the Lady Bears a pair of insurance runs as she connected for her first home run of the year, a two-run shot down the left field line to score Jordan Daniels, to make the score 5-2.
Baylor starting pitcher Lisa Ferguson shut down the Cardinal in the bottom of the inning as the junior improved to 4-1 on the season after scattering 10 hits and allowing two runs in the complete game victory.
Penna took the loss for Stanford after allowing five runs on four hits in six innings of work to fall to 7-2 on the year.
In game two against No. 11 Oregon State, the Baylor bats were kept quiet by Beavers starting pitcher Brianne McGowan as the Lady Bears only scoring in the contest came in the top of the seventh when Tessa Lynam connected on her third home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall, to make the score 3-1.
Oregon State managed single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings as the Beavers won their 11th straight contest and took a 2-1 edge in the all-time series against Baylor.
Baylor's Brittany Turner took the loss as she fell on to 0-2 on the season after allowing one run on two hits in three innings of work.
McGowan picked up the complete game victory after allowing one run on four hits as she improved to 7-1 on the season.
Baylor will close out plat at the Palm Springs Classic when the Lady Bears face Long Island on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 11:00 a.m.
