Track Off to Strong Start at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Baylor freshman Jacob Norman (Temple, Texas) had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters, while senior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) had the top qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles on the first day of competition of the 32nd Nike Stanford Invitational Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Norman, the NCAA indoor 60-meter champion, clocked a regional qualifying time of 10.46 to qualify in the top position for tomorrow's final at 6:01 p.m. CST. Miller matched his regional qualifying time of 14.06 he recorded last weekend in Waco and will run in the final at 5:23 p.m. CST Saturday. Miller also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a regional qualifying time of 51.79 in his first intermediate hurdles race of the season.
Both sophomore Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) and junior Monique Ortega (El Paso, Texas) easily qualified for the regional meet running in their first 3,000-meter steeplechase of the season. Bedell finished eighth and went nearly 20 seconds below the qualifying standard with a time of 10:30.55, while Ortega finished 12th in 10:34.08.
Junior Kandace Tucker (Irving, Texas) clocked 11.84 to qualify second in the women's 100 meters, while sophomore Carla Grace qualified fifth in 11.96. Senior Marquisha Sefas (Ft. Worth, Texas) finished 10th, one spot out of the finals, with a time of 12.16.
Senior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) improved his regional qualifying mark in the long jump with a mark of 7.63 meters (25-0 ½) to finish second, while freshman Queito Teasley (Katy, Texas) finished 11th with a mark of 6.97 meters (22-10 ½).
Senior Rob Morrow (Grapevine, Texas) went just below the regional qualifying mark finishing 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:06.55 - the regional standard is 9:07.00.
Junior Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.45 after regionally qualifying last week.
The meet concludes Saturday with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 8:32 p.m. CST.
