LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 18 Baylor softball team exploded for seven runs on 11 hits as the Lady Bears snapped No. 15 Nebraska's 11-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory over the Huskers in action at Bowlin Stadium on Friday. With the win, Baylor improves to 28-16, 7-4 in Big 12 play while Nebraska falls to 31-7, 5-3 in conference play with the loss.
Back-to-back home runs in the top of the second highlighted a three-run inning to put the Lady Bears on top as junior Chelsi Lake led off the inning with a mammoth shot over the left field wall, her team-leading 15th of the season, to give Baylor a 1-0 lead. Ashley Monceaux followed with a home run just inside the right-field foul pole, her fourth of the season, as Baylor grabbed a two-run lead.
Kylie Conroy put the finishing touches on the scoring in the frame as she lifted a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence to make the score 3-0. The home run was the second of the season and career for the junior as the Lady Bears held a three-run advantage heading into the bottom of the inning.
Baylor grabbed a commanding lead with a three-run third as the Lady Bears grabbed a six-run lead. After Kelly Osburn and Harmony Schwethelm led off the inning with back-to-back hits, freshman Brette Reagan lined a single to right, scoring Osburn as a throwing error allowed Schwethelm to score as well, give Baylor the five-run lead. Lake followed with her second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Reagan from third, as the Lady Bears took a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Bears added a run in the fourth when Osburn delivered a RBI ground out, scoring pinch-runner Alex Colyer as Baylor took a 7-0 lead.
Nebraska added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to make the score 7-2; but, the lead was more than enough for Baylor starter Lisa Ferguson as the junior picked up the win to improve to 15-10 on the season after allowing two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.
Ashley DeBuhr took the loss to fall to 15-6 on the season after allowing seven runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. Conroy led the way for Baylor going 3-for-3 with a home run and a pair of doubles.
The loss was the first for Nebraska at home this season as the Huskers fell to 13-1 on the season at Bowlin Stadium.
The win was the first for Baylor at Nebraska since a 1-0 victory on March 29, 2002, as the Lady Bears improved to 2-7 all-time on the Huskers home field.
Baylor fans can see a replay of the Lady Bears victory over the Huskers as CSTV (DIRECTV Channel 610) will air a tape-delayed broadcast of the contest on Saturday, April 15, at 5:00 p.m.
The Lady Bears and Huskers will close out the two-game series when the teams meet in the series finale on Saturday, April 15, at 1:00 p.m.
