Track Places Nine on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

WACO, Texas - Baylor earned nine selections, two men and seven women, to the Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Teams, the league office announced Thursday. Seven Bears earned first-team honors, while two made the second team.
Sophomore pole vaulter Brinn Newman (Salado, Texas), an accounting major, was one of 19 Big 12 track and field student-athletes to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning first-team honors in her first year of eligibility for the award.
Also joining Newman on the women's first team were sophomores Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas), one of the top 3,000-meter steeplechase runners in the conference and a health science studies major, Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas), the school record holder and one of the top discus throwers in the Big 12 as well as a biology major. Junior Brittany Brockman (Houston, Texas), a health science studies major, earned her second straight first-team honor and was one of the top distance runners in the conference before sustaining a season-ending injury. Juniors Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.), a journalism major who has regionally qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, and Brittany McGuire (Humble, Texas), a distance runner and business major, round out the first team for the Bears, while sophomore Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.), a middle distance runner and forensic science major, was the only second-team selection.
On the men's side, senior Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas), who has regionally qualified in the 1,500 meters and is a biology major, earned first-team honors for the third time in his career. Junior Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas), the Big 12 Indoor champion in the 600 yards and a business major, earned second-team honors for the second straight year.
Nominated by each institutions director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, first-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have between a 3.00 and 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the previous two semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
