WACO, Texas - Semi trucks moved down Fifth Street on Monday and workers began removing and replacing the floor at Marrs McLean Gym, the practice facility for Baylor volleyball.
"This is helping the program move forward," Baylor head volleyball coach Jim Barnes said. "The girls are excited about having a high quality floor and we'll be able to play on the best surface possible. I also believe it will help keep us healthier and cut down on the wear and tear on their bodies throughout the season."
Marrs McLean was surfaced with Sport Court since the floor must sustain constant traffic and activities; however, training on a more flexible, forgiving, wooden surface that matches what is currently in place at the Bears' gameday facility, the Ferrell Center, and the Lt. Jack Whetsel Jr. Basketball Practice Facility is ideal for the volleyball program.
"This is a great opportunity for the volleyball team to be able to train on the same surface as they play their matches," said Bill Chaves, associate athletic director for external affairs as well as the sport administrator for volleyball. "We felt it was important that the surfaces at Marrs McLean, the Ferrell Center and the basketball practice facility match."
The Sport Court was removed on Monday and half of the 8,700 square foot surface was laid in place by Tuesday afternoon. Once the entire surface has been laid, it must sit for a week, then it will be lacquered and painted.
The project is expected to be completed quickly, so it will not interfere with the start of the first volleyball camp July 9. The Bears do not report for their first official practice until Aug. 9.
