WACO, Texas - Baylor junior Brittany Brockman (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) earned first-team honors, while junior Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was named to the second team on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Track & Field/Cross Country Teams announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday.
Brockman, a health science studies major with a 3.86 GPA, earned first-team honors for the second straight year. She had an outstanding cross country season, capturing the NCAA South Central Region individual title and helping lead the Bears to a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Brockman also earned All-Big 12 honors at the conference championship for the third straight year and has been named first-team Academic All-Big 12 in both track & field and cross country the past two seasons. While injuries shut down her track season early this year, Brockman was the Big 12 runner-up in the 10,000 meters in 2005 and also earned All-Big 12 honors indoors in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters last year.
Bedell, also a health science studies major with a 3.90 GPA, was the only underclassman to earn first-team honors, following in the footsteps of Brockman, who was the only underclassman on the first team in 2005. Bedell earned All-Big 12 honors outdoors for the second straight year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and indoors in the 5,000 meters. She also scored for the Bears at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where they finished 15th, and earned all-region honors at the NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Championships. Bedell was named to both the track & field and cross country Academic All-Big 12 First Teams this year.
Tillman, a journalism major with a 3.50 GPA, ran the leadoff leg on the Bears' Big 12 champion mile relay and earned her second-straight All-Big 12 honor in the 400-meter hurdles this year. She also earned All-Big 12 honors indoors in the 600 yards and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, both for the second time in her career.
Baylor was one of eight schools in all of Division I to have three women placed on the all-district teams. Duquesne, Michigan, Notre Dame, Illinois, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Arizona State were the others. Baylor was also one of only 15 schools with two first-team selections.
By achieving first-team status, Brockman and Bedell are now eligible for Academic All-America recognition. The Academic All-America Teams are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.
