Baylor will send 19 student-athletes to compete at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday through Saturday, June 7-10, at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. Sacramento State will serve as host for the second straight year.
The championships will be broadcast live nationally for the first time since 1982. CBS will air the finals on Saturday from 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. CDT. CSTV will have coverage Friday at 7 p.m.
The Bears qualified nine individuals and all four of its relay teams for the championships. On the women's side, sophomore Brittany Devereaux will compete in the discus, junior Kandace Tucker will compete in the 200 meters, senior Angel Perkins will compete in the 400 meters, freshman Erin Bedell will compete in the 1,500 meters and Monique Ortega will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
On the men's side, senior Chris Gillis will compete in the long jump, senior Wil Fitts will compete in the 800 meters, junior Reggie Witherspoon will compete in the 400 meters and senior Jerome Miller will compete in the 110-meter hurdles.
The men's 4x400-meter relay has earned All-America honors each of the last 25 years and has finished outside the top three only four times in that span. Fitts and Gillis each earned All-America honors last year, while the women's lone All-American from a year ago, junior Brittany Brockman in the 10,000 meters, has missed much of the season with an injury.
Last year, the men's team tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships behind the first-place finish of Darold Williamson in the 400 meters, while the women did not score.
The action starts for the Bears Wednesday at 3 p.m. PDT with the semifinals of the women's 4x100-meter relay.
