Volleyball Takes Pair at Clarion Invitational

WACO, Texas - Baylor freshman middle blocker Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) hit .786 with 12 kills, four aces and six blocks as the Bears (4-1) recorded their second sweep of the day with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 30-19) blanking of New Mexico at the Clarion Invitational Friday in non-conference volleyball at the Ferrell Center. Baylor won its home opener in the morning match with a 3-0 (30-8, 30-13, 30-28) victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
"This is the best we've played from the beginning of a match to the end," head coach Jim Barnes said of the New Mexico match. "I told the team it was time to step up to another level and pick up our offensive game and we did that."
Senior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) hit .429 with 11 kills and eight digs, while freshman setter Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) was solid all-around with four kills, four digs, 37 assists and a pair of aces.
"I don't know what it was tonight, but we were really pumped up, probably just the fans and being in front of our home crowd," Breyfogle said. "Taylor and I were really clicking tonight, something that hasn't been there lately, but the whole team was really excited for each other and we fed off that."
Senior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) hit .583 with seven kills, while freshman right-side hitter Katie Sanders (Katy, Texas) added six kills. Junior libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears defensively with 12 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Amanda Renz (The Woodlands, Texas) added eight.
Kelly Therkelsen led the Lobos (1-4) with seven kills, while Gayle Tripp led UNM with eight digs.
The Bears hit .430 while holding the Lobos to -.053. Baylor outdug New Mexico, 41-23, outblocked them, 9-3, and had more aces, 9-4.
Baylor 3, Louisiana-Monroe 0
Baylor ripped off the first 11 points of the match behind the serve of Taylor Barnes, then later scored nine straight points to jump out to a 25-4 lead as it routed Louisiana-Monroe Friday afternoon in its home opener at the Ferrell Center.
Freshman right-side hitter Lauren Keeton (Groesbeck, Texas) saw her first action of the season and led the Bears with nine kills, while hitting .562. LeBlanc hit .545 with six kills in only one game, while Breyfogle hit .800 with four kills in only one game as well.
"It's pretty exciting to get out there for the first time and do whatever I can to help the team," Keeton said. "I think the team did a good job passing, which made it easy for the setters to get us the ball."
Barnes had 12 assists in game one, while junior setter Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) played the last two games and had 17 assists and five digs. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Smith (Lubbock, Texas) added five kills and five digs. Schramek led the Bears defensively with 15 digs, while senior outside hitter Deja Sweeney (Sacramento, Calif.) had nine.
Mari O'Neal led the Warhawks with seven kills, while Darci Mika and Nicole Schaferkotter had nine digs each.
The eight points the Warhawks scored in game one was the lowest in a game by a Baylor opponent in the history of rally scoring (since 2001).
All 15 players saw action for the Bears, with all but two recording a kill.
In Friday's other action at the Clarion Invitational, Houston defeated Arkansas-Little Rock in the opening match, 3-1 (30-18, 30-25, 21-30, 30-20); Houston defeated New Mexico, 3-1 (24-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-19) and UALR defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 3-1 (30-16, 31-29, 28-30, 30-23).
The Bears return to action Saturday against Houston at 2:30 p.m. and UALR at 7:30 p.m.
