Baylor's men's tennis program opened its fall season to mixed results as they host the sixth annual Baylor HEB Intercollegiate at the Baylor Tennis Center on Friday. Five of the six Bears entered in the gold bracket won first round matches but only two advanced through to the round of 16.
In fact, the tournament was rough on many players as only two of the four top 10 ranked players remain in the singles draw. No. 7 Arnau Brugues (Tulsa) and Ole Miss' Erling Tveit (No. 8) each advanced to the round of 16 while No. 4 Lars Poerschke (BU) and ninth-ranked Jerry Makowski (Texas A&M) were both eliminated in the round of 32. Of the four ranked doubles teams, only two advanced through to the quarterfinals. No. 26 Slavko Radman/Damar Johnson (Louisville) and 29th-ranked David North/Eric Molnar (Georgia Tech) are still alive in the quarterfinals while the No. 48 tandem of Arnau Brugues/Federico Soriano (Tulsa) and 58th-ranked Martin Sayer/James Lloyd of Radford were defeated in first round action.
Baylor's Poerschke, Dominic Mueller, Denes Lukacs, Matt Brown and Michal Kokta all won first round matches while David Galic moved to the consolation bracket with a first round loss. Poerschke was upset by Rice's 109th-ranked Ben Harknett in the second round; Mueller and Brown also suffered the same fate. Lukacs, a freshman playing in his first collegiate matches, advanced to the round of 16 as did No. 23 Michal Kokta.
Both of Baylor's doubles tandems were eliminated in first round action.
Play will continue on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center and championship matches will be played on Sunday.
