AUSTIN, Texas - Destinee Hooker recorded 17 kills on .615 hitting as Texas defeated Baylor 3-0 (30-16, 30-22, 30-24) on Wednesday night at Gregory Gym.
The Longhorns hit .421 on the night, committing just 13 hitting errors, while the Bears hit .179 with just 34 kills.
Ashley Engle and Brandy Magee joined Hooker in double-figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Engle also tallied a match-high 10 digs.
Katie Sanders (Katy, Texas) led the way for Baylor with 11 kills, while Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) tallied nine kills. Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) added six kills for the Bears.
Baylor recorded only four team blocks, with Modglin, Breyfogle and Ashlie Christenson (Cleburne, Texas) each recording two total blocks.
Sarah Grace (Houston, Texas) recorded eight digs after missing two matches with an injury, while Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) recorded seven digs to go along with 29 set assists.
Texas jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in game one on the strength of three straight kills by Hooker. Baylor tied the score at five with a Breyfogle kill and two Longhorn hitting errors. Texas took seven of the next nine points to build a 12-7 lead. Baylor got two kills from Christenson before Texas won three straight to take a 15-9 lead and force Baylor into its first timeout.
Texas continued its momentum through the timeout as the Longhorns won six of the next eight points, including five straight, to force Baylor into its second timeout at 21-11. Texas maintained its 10-point advantage through 24-14 when the Longhorns scored four straight and six of the last eight to take game one 30-16.
Texas got nine kills from Hooker in game one, while three players recorded five digs apiece. Christenson tallied three kills in the first game and Grace managed three digs.
The two teams exchanged points through the first 10 points of game two before Texas scored seven of the next eight points to take a 12-6 lead. The Bears responded with four straight, including a Barnes service ace, to cut the lead to 12-10. The Longhorns then went on a 7-2 run to build the lead to 19-12. Baylor cut the lead to five points at 20-15 and then at 23-18, forcing Texas into a timeout.
Texas built its largest lead of the game at 26-18 with three straight points out of the timeout, forcing the Bears to use their first timeout of the game. The Longhorns extended their lead to 10 points with two more points out of the timeout. Baylor scored four straight, including two consecutive blocks, but Texas won two straight to win game two 30-22.
Hooker again led Texas in game two with five kills, while Engle tallied five digs. Modglin and Sanders recorded three kills each for the Bears.
In game three, Texas used four straight points to build a 5-1 lead. After Baylor cut the lead to 8-6, Texas went back out in front 12-7. Baylor got to within two points on eight different occasions, including 21-19, but Texas ran off six of nine points to take a 27-22 lead and held on to win game three 30-24.
