ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Four Bears collected at least two hits each, and Baylor tallied 15 hits as a team in a 5-3 loss to Texas in Sunday's fall exhibition at Dell Diamond. The game does not count in either team's 2008 record, but it does take the place of the teams' allowable 56 spring games.

"It was an opportunity to see some guys taking their first at bats in as game-like a situation as you can make it in the fall, and that was really good," Baylor head coach Steve Smith said. "We got to see a lot of pitchers, and most of them did fine. And we played defense well."

Six Baylor pitchers worked in the 12-inning game. Starter Kendal Volz scattered two hits and a walk with one strikeout over 2.0 innings. Craig Fritsch (3.0 innings), Mace Thurman (2.0 innings), Tom Filip (1.1 innings), Drew Jeffcoat (1.2 innings) and Erik Forestiere (2.0 innings) also saw action on the mound. Filip was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and a hit batsman.

Beamer Weems provided the game's first run, scoring Paul Miles on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. Texas answered in the bottom of the inning on Kevin Keyes' two-run homer. Aaron Miller tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homer in the sixth, but the Bears left the bases loaded in the inning. Texas recaptured the lead on Jordan Danks' solo homer in the seventh and added a pair of runs in the ninth. Miller closed out the scoring with an RBI double in the 10th.

Miller finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI. Weems was 3-for-4 with two sacrifices and an RBI, and Shaver Hansen was 3-for-5. Ben Booker added two hits.

Baylor returns 19 letterwinners, including six position starters and eight pitchers, from a 2007 squad that went 36-27, reached the Big 12 Conference Championship title game and participated in the NCAA Houston Regional. The Bears are one of 15 Division I programs to have reached NCAA Regional play at least nine times in the last 10 years.
