Baylor head coach Steve Smith
On playing a fall game against Texas:
"It was an opportunity to see some guys taking their first at bats in as game-like of a situation as you can make it in the fall, and that was really good. We got to see a lot of pitchers. We threw six different guys out there and most of them did fine, and we played defense well. The only downside to doing this kind of stuff is that there are some guys over here sitting on the bench who play in intersquad games. Some of your opportunities are limited because you're only playing half of your team, while in your intersquad games, you're playing everybody. But that's your only downside. To do a few of these throughout the fall would be pretty profitable."
On Raynor Campbell and Shaver Hansen switching positions:
"We've seen a whole year of the other, so we're looking at this a little bit to see how it goes in the fall. Either one of them could play anywhere, but I do think the spot at third is probably the toughest spot to play. I'm trying to give Shaver (Hansen) as many opportunities as I can give him in the fall, just to evaluate and see how he does over there. We've seen Raynor (Campbell) over there for a whole year, and either one of them can play second, so I just want to see if Shaver can play third."
On today's pitching:
"(Craig) Fritsch threw really well after his first inning. Mace (Thurman) threw fairly well except for not being able to locate his fastball. I was really impressed with (Eric) Forestiere. I'm so happy for him, because when you have Tommy John (surgery) like that, you don't know what you're going to get sometimes. He's come back just as good as he was when he left, and I think he's competing really well."
Baylor sophomore right fielder Aaron Miller
On striking out swinging in his first two at bats:
"I took myself out of the first couple of at bats by watching too many strikes. Both at bats I watched the first two strikes and then swung at a ball for the third strike. It was more mentally that I had to get back in my own game and be more aware of the pitcher and the pitches."
On his sixth-inning home run:
"It felt pretty good. Hopefully I'll get a few more of those. It was a first pitch, and I had gone up there planning to attack on the first pitch. He gave me something I could handle, and I was able to take care of it."
On playing a fall game against Texas:
"It was really fun out here. We got a lot of people in, and a lot of freshman got to see what it was like. Last year we were at Minute Maid (Park), and it was a little nerve-wracking when we were there, especially in front of the hometown family. We got to get out here and get the feet wet a little bit and see what we've got to work with."
Baylor sophomore infielder Shaver Hansen
On moving from second base to third base:
"It's just like any other position, you've got to get used to it for a little while. I've been playing it for most of the fall, so I felt pretty comfortable. There's less reaction time, but other than that I'm adapting pretty well."
On playing third base in the past:
"I played it a little bit my senior year of high school. I hadn't played second until last year, but that's what they had me play, so learning new positions is just something they've had for me."
On going 3-for-5:
"I'm seeing the ball well, and I'm just trying to stay up the middle and hit it hard. They had good pitching, but I told myself I wasn't going to miss the pitches I could hit, and that's what I did."
Baylor junior shortstop Beamer Weems
On playing against Texas:
"It's definitely fun coming out here and playing someone else. It gets a little old playing the same guys every day, but we work hard in that, and it's a lot of fun to come out here and see some competition."
On going 3-for-4 with two sacrifices:
"I was just trying to do the small things to help the team out and work on some personal stuff for the team, and I think everybody did the same. We had a good day out here, and it was a lot of fun."
