Volleyball Falls in Five at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - Lauren Cummings tallied 22 kills and Iowa State placed six players in double-figure kills as the Cyclones held on to defeat Baylor 3-2 (30-20, 31-33, 30-27, 25-30, 16-14) on Wednesday night at the Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State (15-10, 9-6 Big 12) got out to a quick 5-2 lead in game five, and held an 8-4 advantage as the teams switched sides of the court. After Iowa State built a 14-12 lead, Baylor (14-12, 6-9 Big 12) scored to straight to tie the score. The Cyclones took advantage of two Baylor hitting errors to win the match 16-14

After winning its first three five-game matches during Big 12 play, Baylor has now lost its last two five-game affairs after dropping a 3-2 decision at Missouri on Friday night.

Katie Sanders led the way for Baylor with 20 kills, while Anna Breyfogle and Ashlie Christenson each added 17 kills. Haley Thomas also reached double-figure kills with 10.

Iowa State won the game with defense as the Cyclones tallied 102 digs led by Ashley Moss' 29. Six Iowa State players tallied 11 or more digs, and the Cyclones recorded 17.5 blocks.

Baylor recorded a season-high 90 digs, led by Sarah Grace with 22. The Bears also tallied 14 total blocks, with Amanda Modglin contributing eight, while Breyfogle added six blocks.

Taylor Barnes dished out 61 set assists and added a service ace and 16 digs for the Bears.

Neither team was able to find a rhythm in game one as the teams exchanged points through the first 30 serves. With Baylor holding a 15-14 lead, Iowa State scored eight straight points to take a 22-15 lead. Iowa State continued its run as the Cyclones closed out game one 30-20.

Victoria Henson led the way for Iowa State with five kills on .714 hitting. Sanders tallied four kills for the Bears and also added five digs.

Iowa State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game two before Baylor tied the game a five apiece. Neither team was able to build more than a two point lead until Baylor won three of four points to build a 28-25 lead. Baylor had game point at 29-27, but Iowa State turned the tables with three straight points to take a 30-29 lead. With the Cyclones holding a 31-30 lead, Baylor got three straight points as Breyfogle and Sanders each tallied kills and combined for a block to take the game 33-31.

Sanders and Breyfogle each tallied five kills in the game, and the Bears recorded four total blocks. Barnes added 17 set assists, while Grace collected 11 digs.

The Bears jumped out to a six point lead in game three at 11-5. With Baylor holding a 13-9 lead, the Cyclones scored seven straight to take a 16-13 lead. Baylor battled back and tied the score at 20 before Iowa State built its lead back to two points at 27-25. Baylor scored two straight to tie the score at 27. Iowa State scored three straight, including consecutive blocks to close the game at 30-27.

Iowa State got six kills from Henson, while Breyfogle, Sanders and Christenson each recorded three for the Bears.

Baylor built an 11-7 lead in game four before Iowa State won five of six points to tie the score at 12-12. Baylor reeled off five of the next six to force the Cyclones into a timeout. Baylor extended its lead to as many as six points at 26-20 and held on for the 30-25 win.

Baylor got six kills from Breyfogle, while Sanders added four for the Bears. Baylor also tallied five total blocks in game four.
