March 27, 1987
Four days after moving to No.1 in both major polls, Texas suffered its worst loss to date under head coach Cliff Gustafson as Baylor pounded 15 hits and made use of six walks to up-end the Longhorns 15-3. It marked Baylor's first win over a team ranked No. 1 nationally.
Ranked 12th nationally at the time, Baylor had not defeated Texas in a series opener since 1971 and head coach Mickey Sullivan was 0-13 against the Horns in series openers. But in the 1986 Southwest Conference Tournament opener, Baylor unloaded on Texas and ace Greg Swindell 13-5. That was the Bears' biggest win over the Longhorns -- until this game.
A crowd of 2,300 -- the largest ever to date at Ferrell Field -- watched as the game settled into a 2-2 pitching duel in the early innings between Baylor's Pat Combs and Texas' Mark Petkovsek. When the Bears scored 11 runs in the sixth inning, Petkovsek was long gone with his worst outing at Texas.
Sending 15 runners to the plate, Baylor collected eight hits off three Texas pitchers. The Bears scored nine runs before the first out. Todd Hawkins, Shawn McAfee, and Nate Jones all had two hits in the inning and three apiece for the game.
Tony Huey finished with three hits and three RBI, while Jones had five RBI, including a two-run homer in the eighth inning. The Bears had 15 hits, eight for extra-bases.
Combs finished off Texas. After allowing five hits in the first two innings, Combs gave up only three hits and two walks the rest of the game. He struck out of 11, including five to open innings, and allowed only one earned run.
