PALO ALTO, Calif. - The men's 4x400-meter relay team took first place with the nation's fastest time this year, and Brittany Devereaux broke her second school record in as many days as Baylor completed competition at the Stanford Invitational held at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Saturday.
Devereaux (Denton, Texas) shattered the women's hammer throw school record on Saturday, and followed that performance by setting a new record in the women's discus throw on Saturday. Devereaux's toss of 54.42 meters (178-06) broke her own school record by almost one foot.
"I was really excited about setting a new record in the hammer throw," said Devereaux. "This was only my third competition in the hammer, so it's really exciting. Then to set the record in the discus today was like icing on the cake. It was a real honor to throw against two former Olympians today [Suzy Powell and Stephanie Brown Trafton]. It really gives you a lot of confidence to know that you can compete rigth along with them.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team clocked a time of 3:05.29 to win the event with the fastest time in the nation this season. Baylor has not lost a mile relay race to a collegiate team this year, falling only to Team USA at the Tyson Invitational during the indoor season.
"We really wanted to come out and see where we were leading into Texas Relays next weekend," said senior Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas). "We wanted to set a low time and really try to get back to the way we were running during the indoor season."
The Bears set 20 regional qualifying marks on the weekend, including 13 on Saturday. Baylor has now recorded 29 regional marks this season, setting nine at the Dr Pepper Invitational last weekend.
The women's 4x400-meter team lowered its regional qualifying time by nearly four seconds, finishing in second place in 3:37.30. The men's 4x400-meter relay "B" team nearly qualified for the regional meet, clocking 3:10.60 to finish third.
The 4x100-meter relay teams also recorded regional qualifying times in a winning effort. The women won with a time of 45.17, while the men took first in 39.91.
Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) finished fourth and Tiana Hood (Long Beach, Calif.) finished fifth in the women's 100 meter finals with times of 11.65 and 11.80, respectively.
Courtney Thomas (Kilgore, Texas) was the top collegiate runner in the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.48 to finish fourth overall. Jacob Norman (Temple, Texas) looked to take the lead after 40 meters before pulling up with a hamstring injury.
"We really had an outstanding weekend," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We had super performances by a lot of people, and to set 20 regional times is amazing. The highlight of the weekend had to be Brittany Devereaux with two school records. We are hoping that Jacob's [Norman] injury isn't too bad and that we will get him back quickly."
In the men's 400 meters, Quentin Iglehart-Summers (San Antonio, Texas) won for the second straight year with a time of 46.77. LeJerald Betters took second in 46.84, with R.J Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.) in fifth with a time of 47.26 and Mark Teter (San Antonio, Texas) in ninth with a 47.97.
Stasia Kelly-Taylor (Atlanta, Ga.) had a personal-best and qualifying leap of 12.46 meters (40-10.50) to place third overall.
Two women's 1,500 meter runners set regional marks as Nichole Jones (Spring, Texas) clocked 4:20.94 to finish 12th, and Ruth Waller (Manchester, England) recorded a time of 4:26.15 to place 25th.
Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) and Monique Ortega (El Paso, Texas) each qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with times of 10:24.01 and 10:48.70, respectively.
Jeremy Jackson (Round Rock, Texas) finished fourth in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles in a regional qualifying time of 14.16.
Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) placed 18th in the men's 1,500 meters with a time of 3:51.81. Mitch Sanders (Katy, Texas) finished 28th in the men's 1,500 meters "B" section with a mark of 3:53.02.
Baylor returns to action next weekend as the Bears travel to Austin, Texas to take part in the 80th-annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
