SAN MARCOS, Texas --- Lisa Ferguson tossed the final four innings of work and picked up the win as the senior broke the Baylor career record for wins with her 76th career victory as the No. 8 Baylor softball team blanked Texas State, 2-0, in action at Bobcat Field on Wednesday. With the victory, Baylor improved to 42-11 on the season as the Bobcats fell to 25-22 on the loss.
After entering the game at the beginning of the fourth inning and with a 1-0 lead, Ferguson blanked Texas State the rest of the way, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out five in four innings of work.
Since she entered the game in the fourth and pitched the final four innings of work, Ferguson was officially credited with the win and improved to 20-6 on the season. The victory pushed her career total to 76 as she surpassed Stacey Allison (75 wins, 1996-99) for first-place on the Baylor career win list.
Baylor put the first run of the game on the board in the third inning as Chelsi Lake delivered a key, two-out, run-scoring single. With Nicole Wesley at second, Lake laced a line-drive to the left-center field gap, allowing Wesley to score as the Lady Bears grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears managed to extend the lead in the fifth, manufacturing a run without a hit to extend the lead to 2-0. After Brette Regan walked, went to second on an out and stole third, Miriam Romero brought her home with a ground-out to the second baseman as Reagan's run gave the Lady Bears a two-run cushion.
The lead was more then enough for Ferguson, who retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the Baylor win.
Kirsten Shortridge got the start and did an excellent job setting up the victory as the freshman allowed only one hit while striking out three without allowing a walk in three innings of work.
Megan Mikeska took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Baylor had several chances to break the game open; however, could not get the key hit as the Lady Bears tied a season-high with 12 runners left on base.
Alex Colyer had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the win.
Baylor will return home for the final four games of the regular season as the Lady Bears host Missouri in a battle for first-place in the Big 12 Conference. The two game series begins on Saturday, April 28, at 2:00 p.m. with the series finale slated for Sunday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m.
