Volleyball Falls to Oregon, 3-0

WACO, Texas - Oregon rallied on four straight game points in game one, and then cruised through games two and three to defeat Baylor 3-0 (33-31, 30-23, 30-23) in the final game of the Baylor Invitational at the Ferrell Center.

Oregon (6-0) won the tournament championship after winning all three of its matches. The Ducks did not drop a game on the weekend as they swept Mississippi State, Stephen F. Austin and Baylor.

"You really have to give a lot of credit to Oregon," said head coach Jim Barnes. "They showed a lot of poise and stayed together as a team. We just didn't play well; we made a lot of unforced errors."

Trailing 23-22 in game one, Baylor scored five straight to take a 27-23 lead. The Bears then held a 29-25 lead and serve before Oregon used three kills and a Baylor attack error to tie the game at 29 apiece. With the game tied at 31, tournament MVP Heather Meyers recorded a kill and a service ace to win the game.

"We had our chances when we got to 29 points in the first game," said Barnes. "Our serve-receive really let us down, and that's something that we will have to work on. We have been changing our lineups in almost every match, and we are trying to find our best combination."

Baylor (4-3) was led by Katie Sanders (Katy, Texas) who recorded 15 kills on the night. Ashlie Christenson (Cleburne, Texas) tallied nine kills, while Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas), Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) and Haley Thomas (Jewett, Texas) each recorded six kills.

For the first time this season, Baylor failed to outdig its opponents as Oregon recorded 57 digs to Baylor's 56. Sarah Grace (Houston, Texas) led the way for the Bears with 16 digs. Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) and Kelsey Smith (Lubbock, Texas) added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Baylor earned the advantage in net defense as the Bears tallied 10.5 total blocks. Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas), Barnes and Breyfogle each recorded five total blocks.

Baylor will return to action next weekend as the Bears travel to Dallas to take part in the SMU/Radisson Invitational. The Bears will face Sam Houston State, Mississippi and SMU.
