Baylor basketball program rises from the ashes

At a costume party a few years ago, a family friend of Baylor grads Blake and Stacey Welch showed up in a Bears basketball T-shirt.
He also brought a toy gun.
"It was an embarrassing time," Blake Welch, of Shawnee, said.
All the more reason for the Welch family -- with children Molly, Sam and Lucy in tow -- to savor their weekend trip to Lincoln, Neb., where Baylor pulled out a final-minute victory over Nebraska that continued one of the nation's most surprising seasons. It made Baylor 15-2, extending the program's best start since 1945-46; ended a 25-game losing streak in Big 12 road games; and thrust the program into the wire service polls for the first time in 39 years.
The 25th-ranked Bears motor down Texas Highway 6 to take on No. 18 Texas A&M tonight.
