WACO, Texas - All four Baylor men's tennis players won first round matches and three advanced to the qualifying bracket finals of the USTA Futures Pro Circuit at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas on Sunday. A victory on Monday will advance the winners into the tournament's main draw.
Junior All-American Denes Lukacs (Eger, Hungary), junior Attila Bucko (Wellington, Fla.), sophomore Jordan Rux (Kerrville, Texas) and freshman Jurica Grubisic (Sibenik, Croatia) all posted straight-set wins on Saturday's first-round action. Bucko downed Eric Roberson (USA), 6-3, 6-3 and Lukacs blanked Canada's Denis Limitovski, 6-0, 6-0. Rux posted a win over Boris Nicola Bakalov of Bulgaria (6-3, 6-3) and Grubisic upset 16th-seeded Nicholas Edlefsen 7-6(6), 6-2.
In second-round action on Sunday, Bucko, Lukacs and Grubisic again posted straight-set wins and advanced to the bracket finals. The unseeded Bucko triumphed over 15th-seeded Jonathan David of Canada, 6-3, 6-3 while Lukacs downed Trent Aaron (USA), 6-1, 6-1. Trevor Dobson (USA) was the victim of Grubisic in a hard-fought contest, 7-6(4), 7-5.
On Monday, Bucko will take on third-seeded Ryan Rowe (USA) while Lukacs, a No. 9 seed, faces off against fourth-seeded Gregory Ouellette. Both matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. Grubisic will take on Devin Britton (USA) in a match that will start no earlier than 11 a.m.
The tournament's main draw will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
