AUSTIN, Texas - Ashley Engle tallied 16 kills on .536 hitting as No. 3 Texas defeated Baylor 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) in Big 12 volleyball action on Wednesday night at Gregory Gym. Engle led a Longhorns attack that hit at a .446 clip for the match.
Juliann Faucette joined Engle in double-digit kills with 10, while Michelle Kocher added a match-high 40 set assists.
"Our gameplan coming into the match was to serve tough, and to block and dig well," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We did that in the second set, but we struggled in the first and third sets. Texas is too good of a team for us to make those kind of errors."
Katie Sanders led the way for Baylor with nine kills. Ashlie Christenson added seven kills on .353 hitting and two aces, while Anna Breyfogle contributed six kills. Taylor Barnes tallied 30 kills and added a service ace, while Allison King recorded a team-high 10 digs.
The two teams were even through the first 20 serves of the first set, with Texas holding a 10-9 lead. The Longhorns then took eight of the next 10 points to open up an 18-11 advantage. Texas kept the pressure on Baylor, winning the first set 25-14 on a Faucette kill.
In the second set, Baylor jumped out to a four-point lead at 14-10 on a Briana Tolbert kill. Texas responded with four-straight points using three hitting errors by Baylor. With Texas holding a 20-19 lead, Baylor got three-straight points to take a 22-20 lead on a Christenson service ace. Texas rallied for five-straight points to win the set 25-22.
The Longhorns jumped out to a quick lead in the third set, building a 12-4 advantage on consecutive service aces by Faucette. Texas held the advantage for the remainder of the set, winning the set 25-15.
With the win, Texas moves to 11-2 on the season, 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Baylor falls to 12-4 overall, 4-2 in league action. Baylor returns to action on Saturday as the Bears play host to Iowa State at 2 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
