WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball student-athletes, coaches and support staff members will spend the weekend of Nov. 7-9 working with the Christians Organized for Relief Efforts (C.O.R.E.) Alliance in League City, Texas, doing relief work in areas devastated by Hurricane Ike in early September.
Baylor baseball will be involved in various outreach and relief efforts, including house cleaning, tree/debris removal, sheetrock and flooring removal and sundry other construction-related jobs.
"Our players and coaches are looking forward to providing assistance to people hit so hard by Hurricane Ike," Bears' head coach Steve Smith said. "It is wonderful to have a program like C.O.R.E. to coordinate not just our group but groups from all over the country."
C.O.R.E. was established in 2005 by two churches from the Houston area to assist in meeting the needs of people hit by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast area, according to the organization's website (www.core-alliance.org). The two churches were Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Gateway Community Church. The organization has evolved into C.O.R.E. Alliance, an open group of churches serving the community.
Baylor's 2009 baseball roster features three student-athletes from the Greater Houston Area: Raynor Campbell (Katy), Andrew Cooley (Conroe) and Aaron Miller (Channelview). The Bears will leave Waco at 3 p.m. CST Friday and return Sunday.
