Following a week off from competition, the Baylor men's and women's track and field teams remained in the top 25 of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings released on Wednesday. The men's team dropped eight spots to No. 21, while the women's team fell five places to 12th overall.
The USTFCCCA rankings, based solely on the NCAA's indoor track and field descending order list, have ranked both Baylor teams in the top 40 in each poll this season.
The women's distance medley relay, which set a then-nation-leading time of 11:07.00 two weeks ago, dropped one spot to second in the nation this season. Lauren Hagans ranks in the top 20 in three different events, with the fourth-best time in the mile, eighth-best time in the 3,000 meters and 16th-best time in the 800 meters.
Tiffany Townsend ranks sixth in the women's 200 meters and 26th in the 60 meters. Additionally, Danielle Bradley and Nichole Jones rank 13th and 14th, respectively, in the mile.
Trey Harts is the highest-ranked men's athlete at fourth overall in the 200 meters. Quentin Iglehart-Summers owns the fifth-fastest time in the men's 400 meters. The men's 4x400-meter relay has recorded the sixth-fastest time in the nation this season, despite the fact that Iglehart-Summer and LeJerald Betters, Baylor's two returners from its 2007 indoor and outdoor national championship squad, have not competed on the same relay yet this season.
Freshman Whitney Prevost ranks 12th in the 60 meters and 2006 national champion Jacob Norman holds the 17th-fastest time in the men's 60 meters.
The Bears return to action this weekend as Baylor makes its third trip to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Tyson Invitational. Live results will be available at www.HogWired.com and complete meet recaps will be available each day at www.BaylorBears.com.
About the USTFCCCA Rankings
The 2008 USTFCCCA Rankings for NCAA Division I squads were devised and are compiled by Tom Lewis of the University of Missouri. Each team is assigned "power points" based on each individual performance on the official NCAA-qualifying list. For the indoor season, spots one to 35 in each event on the national-descending order list receive points based on its position in the national rankings. Additional power points are assigned to each performance based on comparisons with the rest of the field in that event.
Rankings for the indoor season, using 2008 marks, will be released each Wednesday beginning January 30. A complete rundown of the ranking method and a team-by-team breakdown can be found on ustfccca.org.
