Men's Tennis Drops Match to No. 1 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Baylor's ninth-ranked men's tennis team traveled to the state of Virginia to face top-ranked and undefeated Virginia and dropped a 7-0 decision to the Cavaliers at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Baylor falls to 9-4 on the season while Virginia improves to 15-0.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Dominic Inglot and Houston Barrick topped Dominik Mueller and Attila Bucko 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Sanam Singh and Michael Shabaz claimed the opening point for Virginia with their 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Denes Lukacs and Gwen Corches. At No. 1 doubles, Top-ranked Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over David Galic and Jordan Rux.
In singles, the Cavaliers won the first set in all six matches. Due to an injury to Baylor's No. 1 singles player, Lars Poerschke, all players moved up a spot in the lineup and Attila Bucko played at No. 6. Sophomore Dominik Mueller saw his 11-match win streak halted with a loss at No. 3 singles. Sophomore David Galic, playing his first match of the season at No. 1, registered an impressive performance against the nation's top-ranked player, Somdev Devvarman, pushing the Cavalier to three sets. Devvarman posted a 6-2 first-set win but Lukacs countered with a 6-4 victory in the second set. However, Devvarman rallied from down an early break in the third set to top Lukacs 6-4.
The Bears will now take on No. 21 Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, March 2 at 10 a.m. (CT) at Richmond, Va.
