WACO, Texas - Baylor head coach Scott Drew was named the District VII Coach of the year and junior guard Curtis Jerrells was selected to the All-District VII team, United State Basketball Writers Association announced Tuesday.
Drew has led a Baylor team projected to finish ninth the Big 12 preseason coaches poll to a fourth place tie in the conference and to the cusp of an NCAA Tournament berth. The Bears are 21-9 and finished league play with a best-ever 9-7 record. Drew was named the Big 12 coach of the year by Rivals.com.
Jerrells has racked up several postseason honors after leading the Bears in scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (3.6 apg). He was named a first-team All-Big 12 honoree by both the coaches and league media, and was chosen to the All-District 9 first team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Jerrells is the first Baylor player to receive All-District VII status since teammate Aaron Bruce was so honored in 2005.
