Softball Takes Game Two At No. 9 Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - The Baylor softball team (22-15) dominated No. 9 Houston (38-6), 7-3 in game two after falling 8-3 in game one to earn a split the at Cougar Softball Stadium in Houston, Texas on Wednesday.
Baylor's win over the ninth ranked Cougars was the first over a top-10 team since defeating Texas A&M (ranked seventh) on June 2, 2007.
The Lady Bears collected 22 hits in the two games, including 12 hits in game two, the most since they had 15 against Liberty on March 12.
Baylor leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, as Brette Reagan singled to begin the game. With one down, Courtney Oberg reached on a fielder's choice after Reagan reached second on an error by the second baseman. That allowed Jordan Daniels to single to center for an RBI, followed by Meagan Weldon, who then hit a sac fly to left, scoring Oberg.
The Lady Bears upped their lead in the second after Alex Colyer led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout by Jordan Vannatta and came home on an RBI by KJ Freeland.
The Cougars answered with two in the third, but Shaina Brock got a fly out to right with runners at second and third to keep the Baylor lead.
Meagan Weldon got another Lady Bear scoring inning going in the fourth with a leadoff single. She advanced to second on a stolen base, then to third on a wild pitch. This allowed Colyer to record an RBI on a groundout to second, giving BU a 4-2 advantage.
Weldon and Taylor Marcum recorded back-to-back hits in the sixth, leading the way for Colyer to register another RBI after a shot off the third baseman, allowing Nicole Wesley (who came back in for Marcum) to score.
Baylor found more insurance runs in the seventh, scoring two runs off four hits to take a 7-2 lead, and took the game 7-3.
Brock (4-3) earned the win with seven innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.
The Lady Bears jumped out in front in game one as Kirsten Shortridge singled to center, stole second and advanced to third when the ball got away from the Houston infielder. That allowed Jordan Daniels to step up with two outs and bloop a single to the shortstop, allowing Shortridge to score for the 1-0 lead.
Houston answered with four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning, as Laurie Wagner took an o-2 pitch over the fence with the bases loaded for a grand slam and a 4-1 lead.
Houston added four more in the fourth, chasing Shortridge, and taking an 8-1 advantage after collecting five hits in the inning.
Baylor fought back with a two spot in the fifth, as Brette Reagan blasted her sixth homer of the season over the left field fence, moving her into a tie for third place all time with Ashley Monceaux (28). Daniels collected another RBI, as a single to center brought in Shortridge, but that is as close as the Lady Bears could get, losing 8-3.
Shortridge (5-6) took the loss after going 3.2 innings, giving up 11 hits, seven runs, four earned, two walks and two strikeouts. Shaina Brock came in and pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, one run, no earned and one walk.
Baylor will host Texas Tech for senior weekend starting on Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrapping up on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Waco.
