DALLAS, Texas -- A seven-run first inning proved detrimental for Baylor in a 13-5 loss at Dallas Baptist on a windy Wednesday night at Patriot Field. The teams split a two-game midweek set with the home team winning both games. Baylor (23-14) snapped a three-game winning streak, while Dallas Baptist (23-10) improved to 12-1 at home this season.
Dallas Baptist sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and eight hit safely. Trevor Head had the key hit, a three-run homer to right-center that gave the Patriots a 4-0 lead. It was the first of six home runs on the night for Dallas Baptist; the next five round-trippers were all solo shots.
Baylor finished the night with nine hits, five of which came from two batters. Dustin Dickerson was 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, while Shaver Hansen was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Hansen's two-out, two-run double in the top of the second was the Bears' lone extra-base hit of the night.
Starter Aaron Miller (1-1) took the loss and did not escape the first inning. He allowed seven runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits and no walks with one strikeout over two-thirds of an inning. Wade Mackey worked the next 6.0 innings; he allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
DBU starter Victor Black could not make use of the seven-run first for a win. He allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks with eight strikeouts; however, he was lifted from the game after using 101 pitches through 4.0 innings. Chris Haney (5-2) picked up the victory in relief; he held the Bears to one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
Baylor returns to action this weekend with the traditional split-series against 19th-ranked Texas A&M. The Bears and the Aggies meet Friday at Olsen Field in College Station; first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT. The series then shifts to Baylor Ballpark for games Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Baylor leads the all-time series 39-20, including a 9-7 edge in games played at Dallas Baptist. This was Baylor's first game at Dallas Baptist since a 13-8 victory April 19, 1994. The Bears are 10-6 against Dallas Baptist under head coach Steve Smith. ...
