Track and Field Set for Texas Relays

BAYLOR HEARS TO THE TEXAS RELAYS, STANFORD INVITATIONAL

The Baylor men's and women's track and field teams will hit the road to participate in the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Thursday through Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. A select group of distance runners will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Following competition at the Texas Relays and Stanford Invitational, the Bears will have an off week before hosting the Michael Johnson Classic on April 19 in Waco, Texas. LAST YEAR AT THE TEXAS RELAYS

Baylor lowered its best time in the 4x100-meter relay, and the Bears took second place in the sprint medley relay during the second day of competition at the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday. The men's 4x100-meter relay team lowered its season-best time in the preliminary rounds, finishing second to Florida State in 39.89. Baylor's men's sprint medley relay team won its heat in 3:19.04 to finish second overall. Trey Harts and Reggie Witherspoon ran the first two 200-meter legs of the relay to put the Bears in second place. Quentin Iglehart-Summers brought Baylor closer to the lead with a quick 400-meter leg before Kevin Mutai finished the race with the 800-meter leg to overtake Florida State 20 meters from the finish. The Baylor women's 4x800-meter relay team took second place in a school record time of 8:41.63 on Thursday night. The Lady Bears broke the 16-year old school record of 8:44.86 set in 1991 in Des Moines, Iowa. Danielle Bradley, Ruth Waller, Nichole Jones and Lauren Hagans looked strong through the race, but could not overcome a blistering 800 meters by the Texas anchor leg.

LAST TIME OUT

The Baylor track and field team collected 15 event victories on Friday at the ACU Triangular hosted by Abilene Christian at Bud Elmer Stadium. The Bears also registered seven more NCAA Regional qualifying marks. On a day that saw cold, windy conditions, the Bears were able to set four new NCAA Regional qualifying times, while three marks were recorded by athletes that had already qualified at the Dr Pepper Invitational last weekend. Carla Grace recorded her second regional time in the women's 200 with a winning time of 23.70. Grace also ran the second leg on Baylor's 4x100-meter relay that qualified for the second-straight week. The relay clocked a time of 45.68 to take first place in the event. Trey Harts recorded an NCAA Regional mark in the men's 200 meters in his first open competition since the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Harts won the 200 meters with a time of 20.77, just three one-hundredths of one second off his personal best time. LeJerald Betters also qualified in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 21.22 to finish second in the event. Jeremy Jackson clocked 14.19 in the men's 110-meter hurdles to set his first NCAA Regional mark of the season. Justin Boyd recorded a time of 51.25 to win the men's 400-meter hurdles and tally his second regional mark of the outdoor season. Baylor's 4x400-meter relay won its 23rd-straight race and recorded an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 3:08.97 to win by nearly 10 seconds. Other women's event winners on the track were Brittany Carr (100m), Loren Hodges (800m) and Erin Bedell (1,500m). DeAna Carson (long jump), Kayla Smith (high jump) and Stasia Kelly-Taylor (triple jump) all won their respective field events. Quentin Iglehart-Summers won the men's 400 meters in his first action in more than a month and Nick Lyons won the men's javelin for the second straight week.
