Track and Field Qualifies 10 for Saturday Finals

DeAna Carson automatically qualified for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the long jump, and Baylor had 10 other preliminary qualifiers on the first day of competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Ed Weir Stadium.
Carson leaped to a personal best mark of 6.29m (20-07 ¾) in her final attempt to finish in third place overall, grabbing one of the five automatic qualifying spots for next month's national championship meet. Carson, whose previous personal best of 6.12m (20-01) came at the Michael Johnson Classic, qualified for the event's final rounds by tying for the final spot in preliminaries. Entering the weekend she was ranked 19th in the Midwest Region.
Baylor qualified two athletes in both the men's 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles. LeJerald Betters won his heat with the second-fastest qualifying time in the men's 400 meters to secure a spot in the finals, while Marcus Boyd finished second in his heat with a time of 46.47 to qualify for the event finals on Saturday.
Justin Boyd won his intermediate hurdles heat with the fastest time of the preliminaries at 50.26. Robert Griffin also won his heat with a time of 50.54, the third-fastest time in the qualifying rounds.
Quentin Iglehart-Summers, the defending Midwest Regional champion in the 400 meters was disqualified from his preliminary heat for running in the adjacent lane for five steps.
Both of Baylor's sprint relay teams qualified for Saturday's event finals by winning their preliminary heats. The women clocked the second-fastest time of the qualifying rounds, while the men posted the third-fastest time of the prelims.
Carla Grace clocked the seventh-fastest time in the women's 200 meters to qualify for the event finals. Trey Harts won his heat of the men's 200 meters in 20.72, the second-fastest time of the preliminaries.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday for the second day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Live results and video can be found at www.Huskers.com.
