PALO ALTO, Calif. - Danielle Bradley and Lauren Hagans broke two school records at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Sunday night.
Bradley clocked a school record time of 10:17.86 in her first-ever running of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She placed 14th overall, and was the fifth collegiate finisher. The previous record of 10:19.21 was set by Jessa Chance in 2005. Bradley also clocks the fastest-ever time for a Baylor athlete running the steeplechase for the first time. Earlier this season, Erin Bedell recorded a time of 10:24.56 in her first-career steeplechase event.
"This is amazing for Danielle to break the school record in her first race," said head coach Todd Harbour. "The steeplechase is a race for tough athletes, and Danielle has the mental toughness for it. It didn't take her long to learn the hurdles and the water jumps, and now we just have to get her stronger to get her times down."
Hagans time of 4:16.16 set a new Baylor mark in the women's 1,500 meters. The time also ranks as the third-fastest time in the nation this season. The former school record of 4:16.82 was set by Sandy Forsythe in 1986. Hagans won the event by more than three seconds, running the last lap virtually by herself. Nichole Jones recorded a time of 4:23.34 to finish fifth overall.
"Lauren did a great job and ran a tough race," said Harbour. "She got boxed in at the beginning, but then really took control. This was her first true 1,500 race with some good competition. She was really relaxed and I think that she still has a lot left in her."
Baylor returns to action on May 16-18 as the Bears travel to Boulder, Colo. for the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
