EUGENE, Ore. -
Three former Baylor quartermilers qualified for the event finals of the 400 meters on Monday evening at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Hayward Field.
Jeremy Wariner, the world's No. 1-ranked runner and defending Olympic Champion, clocked 44.66, easing up over the last 40 meters, to win the second semifinal heat. In the first heat, Reggie Witherspoon clocked 44.99, his first sub-45 seconds 400 meter race, to win the heat and automatically qualify for the event finals. Darold Williamson, who anchored the United States to a gold medal in the 4x400-meter relay in Athens, finished second to Witherspoon with a time of 45.16, his fastest time of the season.
Baylor sophomore LeJerald Betters finished fifth in his semifinal heat, just missing a spot in the finals with a time of 45.55. Junior Quentin Iglehart-Summers finished sixth in his heat in 45.84.
In the women's 400 meter semifinals, Sanya Richards, who trains in Waco under legendary coach Clyde Hart, recorded the fastest time of the semifinals in 50.75 to advance to the event finals.
Kyle King finished 11th in the finals of the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 13.51.03.
Following two rest days, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials continues on Thursday afternoon.
