Final Stats
A goal by Arizona State's Carla Scanniello early in the first half guided the Sun Devils (3-2-1) to a 1-0 win over Baylor (2-3-0) on Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"I am really happy with the way this team battled," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Arizona State is the best team we have played and I think our girls took on the challenge well."
Arizona State scored the game's lone goal in the 11th minute after Karin Volpe took a one-on-one shot on Baylor goalkeeper Gianna Quintana, who made a nice save, but Scanniello came in to tap in the rebound for her first goal of the season.
The rest of the half was a battle for possession as the two teams went to the break with the Sun Devils outshooting the Bears 5-2. Baylor upped the defensive pressure in the second half, allowing just two Sun Devil shots, but were unable to capitalize on its pair of chances as both shots were just wide of the goal.
"We have to do a better job in the first 10-15 minutes of the game," Jobson said. "But I think our young players are finally getting settled in and I am looking forward to UTSA on Sunday."
Baylor will be back in action on Sept. 14 as it faces the Roadrunners at 5:00 p.m. at Betty Lou Mays Field.
