WACO, Texas - Ashlie Christenson recorded a match-high 12 kills as the Baylor volleyball team swept Weber State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-2, 25-20), in the Bears' first match at the Baylor Classic on Friday afternoon at the Ferrell Center. Baylor will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. against San Diego State.
Christenson's 12 kills came against only four hitting errors in 32 total attacks. She also added two service aces, six digs and two total blocks.
"Weber State is a good team, and we knew that they weren't going to let a lot of balls hit the floor," said Christenson. "Taylor (Barnes) is such a great setter; she is always able to set a good ball, no matter where she is on the court."
Katie Sanders also reached double-digit kills with 11 winners on .385 hitting. Anna Breyfogle tallied eight kills and a match-high 10 digs.
Taylor Barnes added three kills and 33 set assists to go along with a service ace.
For the fourth-straight match Baylor collected more digs than its opponent, leading 50-42 against Weber State. Sanders and Allison added nine digs apiece, while Barnes contributed seven digs.
The Bears also outblocked their opponent for the fourth-straight time, with 10 total blocks to Weber State's three blocks. Breyfogle, Sanders and Ashley Byrd collected four blocks each, while Byrd added a solo block.
"We got a lot of good touches on our blocks," said Christenson. "Even when we weren't getting the blocks we were still able to keep Weber State off balance."
The first set was back-and-forth for the first 35 serves. With the score tied at 18 apiece, Baylor won three-straight points, including two straight aces from Christenson to extend the lead to 21-18. The Bears used two Weber State hitting errors and two kills from Briana Tolbert to close out the set.
Baylor used a quick start in the second set to build a three-point lead at 8-5, but Weber State rallied to tie the score at 10-10. Weber State used a kill and a service ace to build a 19-15 lead, but Baylor scored seven straight points to take a 22-19 advantage on a double block by Byrd and Christenson. The teams exchanged points until a Sanders kill gave Baylor a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Bears got out to another quick start in the third set and built a 16-10 lead on a Tolbert kill. Weber State was never able to get closer than a two-point deficit at 19-17 as the Bears closed out the match with a Christenson kill.
Baylor improves to 4-0 on the season, while Weber State falls to 3-2. Weber State returns to action at 5 p.m. to face Rice, while the Bears play against San Diego State at 7:30 p.m.
