Men's Tennis: Bucko Survives First Day Of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas - The opening day of the Texas Invitational saw only one Baylor men's tennis player advance to the second day of competition at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Senior Attila Bucko, the fourth-seed in the tournament, received a first round bye and then battled past Longhorn Ben Chen 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals in the 32-man main singles draw. The win raises Bucko's fall record to 7-5.
The Baylor lefty, ranked 85th in the ITA preseason standings, will now face another Longhorn, Daniel Whitehead, in the quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Baylor's two other singles participants were both knocked out of the tournament Friday.
Sophomore Julian Bley, the tournament's fifth-seed, had a tough day dropping his opening round match against Alex Hillard of Texas, 6-2, 6-2. Bley was then forced to withdraw from his first round consolation match with Otavio Perim of Marquette due to injury.
Maros Horny, a sophomore, won his opening round of 32 match over Jonathan Schwerin of Marquette 6-3, 6-1, but then ran into the tournament's No. 2 seed Texas' Ed Corrie. Horny played Corrie close in both sets, but lost each by two games, 7-5 and 6-4. The 1-1 day pushes Horny's fall record to 5-5.
In doubles, the Bears were forced to shuffle their lineup because of Bley's injury. However the change was smooth as Horny teamed up with Bucko to defeat Mindaugas Celedinas and Dmitry Minkin of the University of Texas at Arlington 8-3, in the round of 32. In the Bears second match of the day things did not go as easily as the tandem fell to Jon Wiegand and Vasil Mladenov of Texas in a tightly contested match, 9-8. It was the first time that Horny and Bucko had ever teamed up together in doubles competition.
