NEW YORK, N.Y. - Tiffany Townsend recorded a new world-leading time in the 200 meters and the men's and women's squads combined for 19 NCAA automatic or provisional marks on the final day of action at the 2008 New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory Track and Field Center.
Baylor won the men's team competition with 65 total points as the No. 20 Bears claimed the meet title over third-ranked Oregon, fifth-ranked Texas A&M, sixth-ranked Florida State, seventh-ranked Texas, ninth-ranked BYU and tenth-ranked LSU.
The Lady Bears finished with 68 team points, placing second overall behind top-ranked Texas A&M which earned 72 team points.
"This was just an outstanding meet for us on both sides," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We did a lot of good things. Coming into the meet we really just wanted to try and set a lot of NCAA marks. I am very proud of our kids and what they accomplished this weekend."
Townsend clocked a time of 23.31 to win the women's 200 meters. She lowered her own school record of 23.41 set two weeks ago at the Razorback Invitational. The time ranks as the No. 1 time in the world this year over 200 meters, topping the time of 23.38 turned in by A&M's Porsha Lucas three weeks ago.
"Tiffany had a great weekend," said Harbour. "She keeps running faster and faster and breaking her school record. She had some good races against tough competition this weekend."
The men's 4x400-meter relay won its 32nd-straight meet against NCAA competition, clocking 3:09.30 to win. Though the Bears won their final heat by nearly three seconds, the time just edged LSU's time of 3:09.58 from the second heat.
Trey Harts led off with a 47.3-seconds split, handing off in a dead heat with Oregon for first place overall. Marcus Boyd followed with a split of 46.5 seconds to give Baylor a commanding lead at the second exchange.
J.T. Scheuerman split 48.3 seconds on the third leg and passed to Quentin Iglehart-Summers who split 46.7 seconds with a 30-meter lead to seal the win.
Harts finished second overall in the men's 200 meters with a season-best time of 21.08. Harts recorded three NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the weekend.
"Trey had provisional times in the 60 and 200 meters," said Harbour. He came back and ran a great leg on the relay to close out the meet."
Iglehart-Summers and Boyd finished one-two in the men's 400 meters. Iglehart-Summers made a charge from behind over the last 100 meters and split a pair of runners to edge Boyd at the finish line.
"Q and Marcus probably had the best 400 meter race in a while," said Harbour. "They battled the whole way and were able to finish first and second at the line."
Chris Gowell lowered his season-best time in the 800 meters, winning the event in 1:49.10. After he was boxed in at the back of the pack over the first three laps, Gowell made his move over the last 200 meters for the win.
"Chris is in great shape for this point in the season," said Harbour. "He ran a hard anchor leg on the DMR last night and came out with a great time in the 800 meters today."
Thaddeus Gordon broke his own school record in the triple jump, recording an NCAA provisional qualifying mark at 15.61m (51-02 ¾). Jessica Ubanyionwu also tallied a provisional mark, jumping 12.66m (41-06 ½). That mark ranks as the second-best all-time trailing Baylor jumps coach Stacey Smith for the school lead.
The women's 4x800-meter relay won with a time of 8:58.09 that ranks fourth all-time in school history.
"I'm really proud of the 4x800 relay ladies and how they ran," said Harbour. "All four of them did a great job. Cate Westenhover ran a great leg today and had an outstanding 1,000 meters last night."
Baylor returns to action next weekend as the Bears travel to College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational.
