BATON ROUGE, La. - Despite tying the game in the top of the sixth, a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh handed No. 20 Baylor (18-10 overall) a 4-3 loss to No. 20 LSU (15-5 overall) Wednesday night at Tiger Park.
Baylor compiled three hits, while LSU had just four in a game that lasted three hours and 20 minutes with a pair of rain delays.
Whitney Canion (10-8) took the loss after going 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, three walks and 10 strikeouts. Nicole Wesley and Megan Turk each recorded RBI-singles on the night to lead the Lady Bear offense.
Baylor jumped out ahead in the top of the second with a pair of runs, as Bree Hanafin led off the inning with a walk and stole second. She reached third on a wild pitch, and with one out Nicole Wesley recorded a single for her first RBI of the season. With two outs, Megan Turk doubled to left, bringing N. Wesley around and Weldon, who singled was thrown out at a close play at the plate, limiting the Baylor lead to two.
LSU answered in the third, as a single, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs. A two strike single by Jessica Mouse drove in a pair of runs before a short rain delay halted the game. When play resumed, a passed ball allowed Morgan Russell to score from home, giving the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.
A one hour and three minute rain delay interrupted play with two outs in the bottom of the second. Canion came back to record a strikeout, keeping the LSU lead at 3-2.
The two teams combined for just one hit and remained 3-2 until the top of the sixth when Kayce Walker boarded first with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Colyer. A groundout to third by Hanafin brought Sydney Wilson up with two outs, and she hit a ball back to the pitcher, who bobbled the play that allowed Walker to score and tie the game at three.
LSU put the pressure on and broke through for the win in the seventh, as Russell singled to begin the inning and was sacrificed over to second and made it to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Kirsten Shortridge was intentionally walked, and with runners at second and third, a wild pitch scored Russell, ending the game.
Baylor will finish up its 10-game, nine-day road trip at Northwestern State, with the doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
