NEW YORK - The Baylor men's basketball team has earned a No. 3 seed and will host the No. 6 seeded Georgetown Hoyas from the BIG EAST Conference in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Wednesday at the Ferrell Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CDT on ESPN2.
Baylor (20-14) earned the right to host a first round game after advancing to the title game of the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Saturday in Oklahoma City. This is Baylor's fourth NIT appearance and the first NIT home game in program history; Baylor is 0-3 in its three previous NIT appearances.
It will be Baylor's first NIT appearance since 2001 when the Bears lost 83-73 in the first round at New Mexico. Baylor had previously played in the NIT in 1987 (lost 42-41 at UALR) and 1990 (lost 84-75 at Mississippi State).
Baylor head coach Scott Drew is 0-1 in his lone NIT appearance with Valparaiso in 2003, in his first season as a head coach.
Georgetown (16-14) is making its 11th NIT appearance, posting a 14-11 all-time mark in the tournament. Wednesday will be the first-ever meeting between Georgetown and Baylor.
Wednesday's winner will play the winner of No. 2 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Duquesne. The second round game will be played on March 19, 20, 21 or 23 at a location to be determined.
Tickets will go on sale Monday, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Floyd Casey Stadium and Ferrell Center ticket offices. Reserved tickets are $10 and student tickets are $5. Season ticket holders will have until Tuesday at Noon to claim their tickets. However, all non-season ticket holder seats will be on sale to the public starting at 8 a.m. Monday.
