BAYLOR TRACK SET FOR TEXAS RELAYS
The Baylor men's and women's track and field teams hit the road this weekend as the Bears travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays on Wednesday through Saturday, April 1-4, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Bears are coming off a strong showing at the LSU Relays where the Bears won five relay titles and one individual championship. In addition, a distance crew competing at the Stanford Invitational turned in a strong performance as Erin Bedell set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Chris Gowell earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors for his performance in the 1,500 meters. LAST TIME AT THE TEXAS RELAYS
The Baylor men's 4x400-meter relay clocked a collegiate leading time of 3:02.38 to win the Cleburn Price, Jr. Invitational event at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Bears also won the 4x200-meter relay, and combined with the women's title in the sprint medley relay on Friday night Baylor wins three relay titles at the Texas Relays for the first time in school history. Baylor won two relay titles at Texas Relays on three other occasions. In 2001, the men's team won the 4x400- and the 4x800-meter relays. In 1995, the Bears won the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay, and captured the 4x200- and 4x800-meter relays in 1994. The Bears win their 17th 4x400-meter relay in Texas Relays history, extending its all-time lead at the meet. Texas ranks second in Texas Relays history with 13 4x400-meter relay titles, though the Longhorns have not won a 4x400-meter relay title since 1979. In that same time span Baylor has claimed 15 titles. The 4x400-meter relay time ranks as the eighth-fastest winning time ever at the Texas Relays. Baylor now holds six of the top eight fastest winning times in Texas Relays history. Baylor won the men's 4x200-meter relay won the event finals with a time of 1:22.02, the seventh-fastest time in school history. The women's 4x400-meter relay clocked its first NCAA Regional qualifying time of the season, running 3:36.02 to finish in fourth place. The team dropped its season-best time by more than 12 seconds. The women's distance medley relay finished second with a time of 11:17.10, the third-fastest time in school history.
LAST TIME OUT
The Baylor track and field teams added three more relay championships and one individual title on the second day of competition at the LSU Relays on Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium. In the final event of the day, Baylor won its 37th-straight race in the men's 4x400-meter relay, recording a season-best time of 3:04.93, a 2009 collegiate leader and the second-fastest time in the world this season. Baylor also swept the men's and women's distance medley relay, with the women cruising to a 28-second winning margin with a time of 11:59.55. The men's squad clocked a time of 10:17.65, as anchor Ben Haby, made a strong kick over the final 200 meters to edge Grambling at the finish line. Trey Harts won the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.43, while Whitney Prevost finished fourth in 10.64 and Courtney Thomas took ninth in 10.87. The Bears nearly won their fifth relay title of the day as the men's 4x100-meter relay ran a dead heat with LSU to begin the day. After a photo finish, it was determined that LSU edged Baylor at the finish line by one-thousandth of one second. The women's 4x400-meter relay made a strong showing to end the day, finishing as the top collegiate team in the field, falling to a group of professionals after posting a season-best time of 3:35.27.
