Freshman Megan Turk laced a game-winning, two-out RBI-single down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Baylor softball team (35-17, 10-5) to a 3-2 win over No. 23 Texas (34-15, 10-5) before a season high, 1,318 fans on Wednesday night at Getterman Stadium. The crowd was the seventh largest in Baylor softball history.
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this team," head coach Glenn Moore said. "To keep fighting after all we have been through and to be in the position we are is a tribute to these players. I want to thank the fans for what they did tonight, they were tremendous."
The win marked the seventh walk-off win of the season for the Lady Bears, who have 10 one-run victories on the year.
Whitney Canion (22-13) picked up the victory, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, walking four and striking out 11. It marked her 30th complete game of the year and 18th 10-plus strikeout game of the season.
Tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, Bree Hanafin ripped a one-out double to left field. After Alex Colyer walked, Nicole Wesley hit into a fielder's choice, but Colyer held up advancing to second, allowing Wesley to reach safely. With two outs, Turk sent a 1-1 pitch down the left field line, scoring Hanafin from third for the 3-2 win.
Baylor jumped on the board first, as Tiffany Wesley and Kayce Walker each singled to lead off the first, followed by a Brette Reagan walk. Hanafin then hit a deep sac fly to right, scoring Wesley for the 1-0 lead. The Lady Bears could not scratch anymore runs across, however, leaving a pair stranded.
The Longhorns tied it the next inning, as Amy Hooks homered to left center with one out. Texas took the lead in the third, with Loryn Johnson hitting a two-out single through the left side to score Desiree Williams for a 2-1 advantage.
The Lady Bears answered back in the fourth, with Courtney Oberg leading off the inning with a double to right center. With one out, pinch runner, KJ Freeland advanced to third on a wild pitch, but could not score when T. Wesley hit a soft single to third. Sophia Lujan stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball to second, but the hurried throw to home went wide of the catcher and Freeland slid in safely for a 2-2 tie.
Texas threatened to take the lead in the seventh when Kelly Melone doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sac bunt Kacie Gaskin. Canion got Williams to strike out swinging, and after an intentional walk to Courtney Craig, got Alexis Bennett to chase a third strike, keeping the game tied heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Brittany Barnhill took the loss, going 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, three runs, four walks and three strikeouts.
Baylor is now tied for third place in the Big 12 standings and will hit the road for a weekend series at Kansas beginning on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping up on Sunday at noon. Both games can be heard live on 104.9 FM, or by logging on to baylorbears.com.
