WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team fared well in the final ITA rankings. Three singles players and two doubles teams were listed in final rankings of the 2008-09 season. In addition, the Bears ended the season ranked No. 7 as a team.
Baylor, at 26-6 on the year, finished the season ranked among the nation's top eight for the eighth straight year and the top 10 for the 10th time in the last 10 years. Since 2003 the Bears have advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships and claimed the national championship in 2004, advanced to the finals in '05 and the semifinals in '06 and '07.
Juniors Denes Lukacs and Dominik Mueller and sophomore Jordan Rux all made the singles list while Rux and senior David Galic and Lukacs and freshman Maros Horny were listed in doubles.
Lukacs was Baylor's highest ranked player, finishing the season at No. 8. Lukacs ended the season at 31-9 overall and was 21-5 playing at No. 1 for the Bears. He has ranked no lower that 10th since the Feb. 19 poll. In addition, he earned All-American status for the second straight season and is one of only five Bears to become a two-time singles All-American, joining Benjamin Becker, Benedikt Dorsch, Lars Poerschke and Johann Jooste.
Rux capped his sophomore season ranked No. 46. The Kerrville, Texas, native was 25-13 on the season and 16-9 in dual match competition. He played at No. 2 for the Bears in 24 of the 25 dual matches and was selected to play in the NCAA Championships' singles bracket.
Mueller recently broke back into the national rankings at No. 124 and climbed up seven slots to finish his junior season at No. 117. He played predominantly at No. 4 for the Bears and was 25-11 on the season and 21-7 in dual match competition.
In doubles, Rux and Galic ranked No. 20 in the final poll with a 13-8 mark and Lukacs and Horny moved up from No. 64 to No 58 with a season record of 16-6.
