IRVING, Texas - Senior middle blocker Anna Breyfogle was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Baylor volleyball team's three wins over the weekend, as announced by the conference office.
Breyfogle started the season with seven blocks (1 solo, 6 assist) in a sweep of Southeastern Louisiana before breaking the school record for a three-set match with 12 (1 solo, 11 assist) in a sweep of tournament-host Houston. In the Bears tournament finale, Breyfogle added to her weekend total with four more blocks (1 solo, 3 assist) in another sweep, this time over the University of New Orleans.
The Buda, Texas native's 23 blocks on the weekend was 10 more than any other player in the Big 12, while her average of 2.56 per set was nearly twice as many as her closest competitor in the conference.
In addition, Breyfogle hit a league-leading .444 on her way to 29 kills with just five errors in 54 total attacks. She had 12 kills in the match against Houston, giving her the rare kill-block double-double with 12 of each.
The honor was the fifth of Breyfogle's career with one last season, and three as a sophomore. She was last honored as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6, 2008.
The Bears return to action tomorrow in a mid-week, non-conference tilt at Texas Christian University. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. in the University Rec Center on the campus of TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
