Waco, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team will open its fall 2009 schedule by participating in the Midland Tournament set for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 18-20 in Midland, Texas. The event is one of seven tournaments Baylor tennis athletes will compete in before the Thanksgiving holiday break.
"Every guy has very specific things they are working on and we try to help them transition from practice to matches so they can continue to build confidence and a comfort level for what they are trying to do," men's tennis coach Matt Knoll said. "Tennis is a competition sport and we really don't get to play as much as we'd like, but all these matches we get to play are great for the guys."
After Midland, the team will return to Waco the following weekend to host the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Tournament slated for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 25-27.
"We are lucky that tennis is so strong in this part of the country that we have great events right here, starting with our own event where we are going to have 20-25 college ranked players," Knoll said. "It is great to have that opportunity to play some great tennis; it will mean a lot to us in the spring."
The Bears will start October in Oklahoma as members of the team will play in the ITA All-American Tournament, one of three ITA events on the Bears' fall schedule. The event will run from Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 8-11 in Tulsa, Okla., at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Baylor will return to Texas to compete in the ITF Futures Tournament held October 16-25 in Mansfield, Texas.
The second ITA event for the Bears is the ITA Southwest Regional in College Station, Texas, Saturday-Tuesday, Oct. 24-27.
The last fall tournament for the Bears in Texas will be the Texas Invitational held Friday-Sunday, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
To wrap up the fall schedule Baylor will travel to New Haven, Conn., to participate in the ITA National Indoors, Friday-Monday, Nov. 6-9.
