WACO, Texas - Senior
Anna Breyfogle chalked up 12 kills and five blocks as Baylor hit an efficient .289 on offense on its way to a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) of Big 12 rival Kansas on Saturday at the Ferrell Center. The win was the third Big 12 victory in a row for the Bears, and marked the best start in school history with 14 wins in the first 15 matches.
The Baylor attack played efficiently all day, hitting at least .269 in each set and making no more than six errors in any set. With Breyfogle's 12, Katie Sanders had eight, Elizabeth Graham had seven, and Taylor Barnes and Torri Campbell each totaled five kills to make up the bulk of Baylor's 43 in the match. Barnes also had 34 assists, five digs and two blocks to show her versatility.
On defense, the Bears played a solid back row with 43 digs, and kept KU hitters off-balance at the net with 10 blocks. Libero Allison King kept her streak of now 12 consecutive matches with at least 10 digs, recording 16, while Caitlyn Trice added 11. Six Baylor players had a least two blocks in the game with Breyfogle (5), Torri Campbell (3) and Katie Sanders (3) each getting at least three.
With KU's top attacker Karina Garlington out with injury, Allison Mayfield took on the bulk of the offense. In 45 attacks, Mayfield had 14 kills and six assists. Jenna Kaiser added seven kills, and was the only other KU player with more than three in the match.
The Jayhawks matched BU point-for-point in the first set. Baylor took a 4-2 lead on a Graham kill, then went up 9-7 on a kill by Breyfogle, but each time the Jayhawks fought back to tie. With the game knotted at 16 apiece, Baylor finally took control with a three-point run on the strength of kills from Breyfogle and Campbell. The Bears then scored three in-a-row to close out the set, finishing with a Campbell solo block and a KU block error.
The second set was all Jayhawks until Baylor regained its composure. KU pushed lead to as many as four at 19-15, but a 6-1 run with kills from Campbell, Barnes, Breyfogle, and two from Sanders ripped the lead away. Baylor scored four of the next six points, finished by a service ace from Breyfogle to take the set.
Baylor hit the floor in the third set with a mission to finish with a sweep and took control early. Back-to-back aces by Caitlyn Trice made it 5-3, and four points in a row with back-to-back blocks made it 16-7. Breyfogle teamed up with Barnes once and Christenson once on the block during the run. Later in the set, Baylor equaled that feat, blocking two more KU attacks in a row. Briana Tolbert teamed up with Katie Sanders on the first one, then recorded a solo block against Tayler Tolefree on the next one. Breyfogle, fittingly, finished off the set with a kill.
The Bears (14-1, 3-1 Big 12) will finish up the last of a season-long four-match homestand against Missouri on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Ferrell Center. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
