NORMAN, Okla. - Baylor's volleyball team erased an early one-set deficit, but came up short in a five-set loss (18-25, 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 8-15) at Oklahoma on Saturday in Norman, Okla. The match marked the fourth consecutive five-set loss for the Bears at OU, and the eighth in a row at McCasland Field House.
Baylor dropped the first set, but came back to take the next two sets in dominating fashion before falling in five. Despite the loss, two Baylor players had career-best efforts with Elizabeth Graham and Zoe Adom each posting career high kill numbers. Graham had a match-high 18 kills, while hitting .357, and Adom recorded 12 kills while hitting .435.
Oklahoma got 16 kills from Suzy Boulavsky and 14 kills and six blocks from Sallie McLaurin to pace the offense. Setter Brianne Barker had 52 assists and libero Maria Fernanda had 23 digs to lead OU.
Defensively, Baylor had four players with double figures in digs, led by 13 each from Caitlyn Trice and Brittany Ridenour. Trice's number marked the 23rd consecutive match with at least 10, while Ridenour added 24 assists for her team-leading ninth double-double of the season. Qian Zhang and Allison King each had 12 digs.
Baylor jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set, behind kills from six different players, including two each from King and Graham. From there, the OU offense came alive with an 11-2 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Sooners then pushed the lead 21-16 with a kill by McLaurin, and closed out the set with a Caitlin Higgins kill 25-18.
Tied at 6-6 in the second set, Baylor blew it wide open with a 5-0 run, featuring two kills by Adom and a Torri Campbell service ace. Campbell then made it 19-13 with a kill, and Baylor was on its way to a 25-16 set win. Ridenour posted back-to-back service aces to close it out.
In the third, Baylor jumped out of the gates and never looked back. Without trailing the entire set, the Bears built a 7-3 lead with two straight kills from Campbell. BU scored five in a row to make the score 19-12 with two service aces by King and a block by Campbell and Adom. Down the stretch, Graham recorded two kills to keep the Baylor cushion and set up the set-ending OU attack error at 25-18.
Campbell tied the score at 6-6 in the fourth with a kill, but Oklahoma responded with a 10-3 run to take a commanding lead. Two more kills and a block by Campbell got BU back to within 19-15, but, again, OU had an answer with back-to-back points on its way to a 25-19 win.
In the fifth, it was all Oklahoma, as the Sooners jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two BU attack errors. The Bears would only get as close as 11-7 after a kill and block by Adom, before OU put on a late run to take the set 15-8.
Baylor travels to Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday, Nov. 3 to take on 12th-ranked Iowa State. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ames High School. Due to heavy flooding inside the Cyclones' Hilton Coliseum, all of ISU's home matches thus far have been at AHS.
