MANHATTAN, Kan. - Baylor's volleyball team thwarted a Kansas State comeback attempt in the fourth set to win 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23) and sweep the season series on Saturday night in Manhattan, Kan.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead before dropping the third set, but a comeback in the fourth set extinguished any KSU hope of a win. Baylor middle blockers Elizabeth Graham and Torri Campbell led the team with 16 and 13 kills, respectively, while setter Kate Harris had 23 assists and 16 digs.
"Elizabeth (Graham) played really well all night, and Torri (Campbell) came through in the clutch to help us get this one," head coach Jim Barnes said. "It's always tough on the road in a hostile place, but we really stayed together even though we weren't really clicking and found a way to win. Our serving and our defense definitely helped us win this match."
Senior Caitlyn Trice ran her streak of double-digit dig matches to 27, recording 19 on the night. Allison King added 23 digs to lead the Bears, while Graham was also a force at the net with four blocks.
Down 9-8 in the first set, Tolbert and Graham each showed their strength on both sides of the ball. Each player collected a kill and combined on a block assist before an ace by King gave the Bears a 12-9 lead. After KSU closed to within 12-11, the Wildcats committed two consecutive errors and Trice compounded that with two service aces in a row for a commanding 16-11 lead. Another service ace, this time by Ridenour, preceded a Tolbert kill to finish off the set 25-17.
In the second set, the Bears ripped off a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead on the strength of a kill by King and a service ace by Christenson. The Wildcats fought back to tie the match at 16-16 after three Baylor errors, but the Bears regained the lead with kills by Graham and Christenson to set up set-point. Campbell put away the final point on a kill for a 25-23 set win.
Baylor took an early 3-1 lead in the third set with a kill by Tolbert and two KSU errors, but the Wildcats stayed within two until taking the lead for good at 18-15 as part of a 4-0 run. The Bears got a kill by Graham to get back within two at 21-19, but the Wildcats pulled away, scoring four of the final six points to win 25-21.
The Bears started the fourth set with kills by Graham and King for a 3-0 lead, but Kansas State quickly answered to take a 5-4 lead. After the Wildcats pushed the lead to as big as four at 14-10, Baylor turned the tide back with a monster 13-4 run to take a 23-18 lead. During the span, Campbell put the offense on her shoulders with three kills and a block. Campbell then made the finishing kill of the night for a 25-23 win.
The Bears will look to avenge a loss from earlier this season when they travel to Kansas on Wednesday, Nov. 17. The first serve will be at 6 p.m.
