LAWRENCE, Kan. - After dropping the first set, Baylor took down the University of Kansas in each of the next three to record a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-12) on Wednesday in Lawrence, Kan.
Baylor's defense frustrated the Jayhawks into 33 errors and an .084 hitting percentage with 11.0 total blocks and 69 total digs. The digs mark pushes Baylor's season total over the 2,000-dig barrier for the season, marking a program record in the rally era. Torri Campbell led the way at the net with six blocks, while Allison King recorded 21 digs to lead the back row.
Offensively, Ashlie Christenson and Elizabeth Graham each had 12 kills, while Zoe Adom and Campbell posted nine each. The Bears had 56 kills with just 22 errors in 155 total attempts.
"The key to the match was our comeback in game three, being on the road and being down that far would have been tough," head coach Jim Barnes said. "The team really rallied and we were able to come back in maybe our best set of the season. We had a really great boost from Zoe on the right side that helped open up our offense. And after a slow start our defense really played well."
In a back-and-forth first set that featured nine ties and four lead changes, it was Kansas that was able to put together the last run for a 25-23 win. The Jayhawks took a 7-4 lead with a kill, but Baylor answered with a 10-4 run to take a 14-11 lead. The run ended with three straight kills from Christenson, Ridenour and Campbell. The Bears held the lead to 18-16 with a kill by Tolbert, but the Jayhawks were able to get control of the set with a late 5-1 run for the win.
In the second set, the Bears got the spark they needed right from the start with a 4-0 run to open the frame. Graham and Adom knocked out kills to start and King added a service ace. The Bears extended the lead to 15-8 with a 3-0 run on the strength of a Christenson kill and Trice ace, but Kansas got back to within 17-15 with a 7-2 run. The Bears held the Jayhawks at arm's length from there, finishing off the set 25-20 with back-to-back kills by Christenson and Graham.
The Bears then fought through the third set after facing a 14-9 deficit. A kill by Christenson got BU back to within three at 16-13, then the Bears put on a 5-0 run. Tolbert started the span with a kill before KU recorded four straight hitting errors for a 20-19 Baylor lead. Tied at 23-23, Campbell and Tolbert put away back-to-back kills for a 25-23 set win.
Baylor opened the fourth set with a 3-1 lead, featuring Adom, Christenson and Graham. After Kansas tied the set at 5-5, Baylor ripped off an 8-0 in which KU made seven errors, including two blocks by Baylor. The Bears extended the lead to nine at 16-7 with kills by King and Graham. Baylor then outscored the Jayhawks over the final 14 points 9-5 getting four kills by Christenson down the stretch for a 25-12 clinching set.
The Bears will be back on the court inside the Ferrell Center on Saturday, Nov. 20, taking on the University of Missouri. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. as Baylor will look to avenge a loss to the Tigers earlier this season.
