AMES, Iowa - Baylor's volleyball team was swept 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 14-25) by 12th-ranked Iowa State on Wednesday night in Ames, Iowa. The match was played at the Ames High School Gymnasium, due to late summer flooding of the Hilton Coliseum.
The Bears held leads in each set, but were unable to capitalize as Iowa State proved to be too much offensively. Baylor hit just .096 (33-22-115) in the match, compared to .218 (45-19-119) for Iowa State. Briana Tolbert led Baylor in kills for the first time this season with eight.
On defense, Allison King had 15 digs to lead the Bears, while Caitlyn Trice added her 24th consecutive match with double figures, recording 13 digs. Ashlie Christenson tied a season high with four blocks, while Elizabeth Graham added four as well.
A 3-0 run for Baylor in the first erased a one-point deficit, and gave Baylor a 9-7 lead when Zoe Adom followed a block assist with King with a kill of her own. The Cyclones answered with a 6-1 run to force a Baylor timeout with a 13-10 lead. The Bears stayed within four points the rest of the set, getting three kills each from Tolbert, Christenson and Graham in the set. A kill by Campbell got BU back to within two at 24-22, but ISU closed it out with a kill by Victoria Henson.
In the second, the Bears came flying out of the gates with runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to take an 8-2 lead. During the first stretch, King added a kill just before two ISU errors. The 4-0 run was a block and a kill by Graham, followed by the first of two service aces by King. Baylor then held off a big Cyclone run with a kill by Torri Campbell to stay in the lead at 11-7. From there it was all ISU, as the Cyclones outscored Baylor 14-5 over a 19-point stretch to take a 16-13 lead. Three straight errors by Iowa State got Baylor back to within 22-21, but Henson added two kills to put the set out of reach for a 25-22 victory.
A kill by Graham coupled a block assist alongside Christenson gave BU an early 3-0 lead in the third set. But, as they did all match long, Iowa State took the lead back with a 4-0 run, then extended it to 11-7 with back-to-back kills by Henson. The Bears answered this time with a 3-0 run led by a kill from Ashley Byrd to make it 11-10, but the Cyclones took 11 of the next 12 points on their way to a 25-14 set win.
After back-to-back road matches, the Bears will be back in the Ferrell Center for two consecutive matches. On Saturday, Baylor will take on Texas A&M at 7 p.m. BU took a 3-2 victory over the Aggies earlier this season in College Station, Texas, and will look to sweep the season series for the first time in program history.
