LUBBOCK, Texas - Raynor Campbell and Logan Verrett were named to the Brooks Wallace Award and Pitcher of the Year Award Watch Lists, respectively, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.
The Wallace Award recognizes the nation's top shortstop and is presented on July 2 in Lubbock, as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.
Campbell is joined by Carter Jurica of Kansas State and Kenny Jackson of Texas A&M as the only players from the Big 12 Conference on the initial Wallace Award Watch List.
A senior from Katy, Texas, Campbell is hitting .407 with six doubles, four home runs and 23 RBI through the season's first 18 games. He's also scored 12 runs and gone 6-for-8 stealing bases.
The Pitcher of the Year Award will also be presented as part of the College Baseball Awards Show. This is the second year the College Baseball Foundation will present the award.
Verrett, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, has posted a 2-2 record with a 3.67 ERA and 31 strikeouts against just seven walks through his first four starts of the season.
Verrett worked 7.0 innings in each of his first three starts, and then he went 6.0 innings and earned a win in his most recent outing. He did not allow any earned runs and posted a career-high 11 strikeouts in a 7.0-inning complete game against Oral Roberts in his third start of the season.
The sophomore right-hander was on the mound with a 5-0 lead in the third inning when his start at Oklahoma on Friday was called due to rain. He had struck out four batters through the first two innings, but because the game wasn't completed, statistics were erased.
Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma are the only other Big 12 schools to have representatives on the initial Pitcher of the Year Watch List.
Baylor has won seven consecutive home games, but the Bears dropped the only game they were able to play this past weekend at Oklahoma.
The Bears (11-7, 0-1 Big 12) host UTSA at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and then take on the Jayhawks in a three-game series. Saturday's game against Kansas is also slated to start at 3 p.m., while the Sunday series finale has a 1 p.m. first pitch.
