WACO, Texas - Kansas erased a 7-3 Baylor lead with five runs in the fifth, and the Jayhawks held on for a 9-8 win over the Bears in the series opener Friday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Shawn Tolleson (1-3) took another tough-luck loss when four unearned runs helped Kansas (14-8, 1-0 Big 12) overcome the early Baylor (12-8, 0-2 Big 12) lead. Tolleson allowed eight runs - four of which were earned - on eight hits in 4.2 innings.

Kansas got on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Casey Lytle and Robby Price led off with singles, Brian Heere knocked a RBI single and Jimmy Waters drove in a run with a double.

Tolleson got back-to-back strikeouts to strand two runners in scoring position, and the Bears answered with two runs in the second against Kansas starting pitcher T.J. Walz.

Jon Ringenberg drove in Max Muncy with a single on the eighth pitch of his at-bat, and Landis Ware's RBI single tied the game at 2-2, but the Jayhawks regained the lead in their next trip to the plate.

Tony Thompson drilled a solo homer to left, ending a string of seven straight retired by Tolleson and giving KU a 3-2 lead. However, that lead would be short-lived as the Bears broke through for five runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Brooks Pinckard singled, Joey Hainsfurther drew a walk and Raynor Campbell's bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. Muncy gave BU the lead with a two-run single, Tyler Collins added a RBI double and Ringenberg and Gregg Glime drove in runs with groundouts, putting Baylor on top 7-3.

Both pitchers put up zeroes in the fourth, but Tolleson ran into trouble after a one-out error in the fifth. Josh Turley came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out, but he walked in the game-tying run and Lytle drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single.

Turley stranded the bases loaded, keeping the Bears within one, but Baylor went hitless over the next 5.1 innings, and wouldn't score again until Kansas had added a run to its lead.

Walz was pulled after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. The Jayhawks added a crucial insurance run in the eighth when Price tripled and came home on Heere's RBI single.

The Bears came up just short as they attempted to rally in the ninth. Pinckard doubled, ending a streak of 18 consecutive hitless plate appearances for the Bears, and Hainsfurther cut the deficit to one with a RBI single.

Campbell hit a deep drive to center field that was caught against the wall, and Muncy hit a flyout to left to end the game. Brett Bochy earned his fourth save of the season by holding the Bears to one run over the final 2.0 innings.

The Bears will look to even the series when it resumes Saturday at 3 p.m. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
